Pirates of Penzance - Seattle Gilbert & Sullivan Society Review
by Don and Peggy Doman

Sometimes you just can't win and then out of nowhere, as luck would have it, things fall together . . . kinda.

The Seattle Gilbert & Sullivan Society were producing Pirates of Penzance, a favorite production . . . made even better by having this magical musical being produced live on stage in Seattle. The last review we had done of the Seattle Gilbert & Sullivan Society was their excellent version of Cabaret at the start of the COVID pandemic. It would take three years before we made it back to Seattle to review any play, which we had just had at the end of April.

At the end of June 2022 we were asked to review "Pirates" produced by the Seattle Gilbert and Sullivan Society, and we were thrilled. It's one of our favorite G&S productions. Our cousin Lavinia was going to join us and she was ecstatic. Lavinia taught acting and directing for years at Wayne State University in Detroit, before retiring and returning to the Tacoma area where she grew up. A week before the production opened, we had to cancel due to a family medical issue. All three of us were vastly disappointed.

Although we didn't see the production, we were sent photos of the performance just in case we would be able to see the play. Peg and I laughed and laughed when we looked over the production photos.

Earlier in the spring Peg and I had seen "Pirates" performed at the University of Puget Sound. It was a student production directed, produced, musically directed, and choreographed by Dawn Padula, Director of Vocal Studies, Professor of Voice, Mezzo-Soprano (quoted directly from the UPS website). It was great fun and a remarkable production of the Pirates.

In this July 2022 production, Dawn performed the part of Ruth in the Seattle Gilbert & Sullivan Society production of Pirates of Penzance. Peg, my cousin Lavinia, and I all attended the University of Puget Sound. Peg and I over the years have seen numerous stage productions at U.P.S.

Peg and I had never seen Dawn act before, but we did enjoy her performance in a jazz concert several years ago. We would have loved her version of the character Ruth. "Ruth is the secondary antagonist of Gilbert and Sullivan's 1879 comic opera The Pirates of Penzance; or, The Slave of Duty. She is the hearing-impaired maid who mistakenly apprenticed the protagonist Frederic to the Pirate King at the age of eight in the first place and stayed on the ship for thirteen years thereafter, gradually accepting life as a swashbuckling buccaneer." (Wikipedia) Dawn had done a marvelous job with her students for all of the parts as well as the orchestra. She played a very nice Ruth as well.

The musical runs through July 31, 2022. Get your tickets here: https://app.arts-people.com/index.php?ticketing=sgss

In the UPS version earlier this year we howled with admiration and laughter for the performance of the Modern Major General.

Sadly, we missed the SG&SS performances of the Pirate King, Frederick, the pirates, Ruth, Mabel and the wards, and the Bobbies, but mostly we missed the Modern Major General. Judging from the photos, Jason Marr looks as if he did an excellent comedic presentation in Seattle.

And, we miss the reason for many excellent performances, the lyrical music and witty lyrics of the most admirable Gilbert and Sullivan. We await the next production from SG&SS (and UPS).
