Tenderly Rosemary Clooney Songbook and Corned Beef
by Don and Peggy Doman

Tenderly, The Rosemary Clooney Songbook production at CenterStage Theatre in Federal Way, Washington.

There are too many fun things to do in the Pacific Northwest. Sometimes we have to just pile them on one another and hope it all works out for the best. This was our plan for St. Patrick's Day. Our friends Donn and Debbie Irwin throw an annual Corned Beef and Cabbage Dinner Party, which of course we didn't want to miss, but it didn't start until four in the afternoon. CenterStage was presenting Tenderly, The Rosemary Clooney Songbook, but it was only on the weekends for a limited run. We finally decided to attend the 2:00 PM performance of Tenderly in Federal Way and then hustle back to Tacoma for a tender corned beef dinner. With the help of friends we made it happen and so had a wonderful Saturday adventure.

Laurie Clothier and Katherine Strohmaier performing at CenterStage Theatre in Federal Way, Washington. We usually attend performances in the evening rather than Saturday or Sunday afternoon. What made the drive memorable from Tacoma through Brown's Point and Dash Point and into Federal Way was that the weather was clear, offering coastal scenary for viewing.

We missed a Frank Sinatra tribute performance earlier in the year at CenterStage, so even though it was difficult to work in Rosemary Clooney, it was well worth the trip. Peg's sister Pat joined us for the day. She contributed a Bette Midler CD of Rosemary Clooney songs. Those should be fun to listen to in a quiet moment. CenterStage is having a fundraiser later this spring entitled Somewhere Over the Rainbow featuring songstress Judy Ann Moulton singing Judy Garland tunes. Judy Ann Moulton travels the Puget Sound Region with a 12-piece orchestra performing her Judy Sings Judy production. Peg and I are looking forward to enjoying the fundraiser.

For this performance at the CenterStage we sat front row center. Just like being ringside at a boxing match, front row seats let me see and hear everything . . . plus I can stretch out my legs and get comfortable.

Laurie Clothier performing as a diva in Seattle, Washington.Laurie Clothier performing in Seattle, Washington.Tenderly featured Laurie Clothier and Katherine Strohmaier. Both singers ended up disappointing me, not with their performance, but with my missing them in the past.

Laurie Clothier was captivating on stage. Reading her credits I noted that she had performed one woman shows with the Cabaret de Paris. For years Peg and I looked over the information, but had never made our schedules work so we could attend. Double-darn. She had also performed in Divalycious at Julia's on Broadway, which is just a few blocks from our favorite B&B on Capitol Hill. She's also performed extensively with the Empty Space, where we used to be regular attenders in the early days. Double and triple darn. She's also been a guest soloist with the Tacoma Symphony Orchestra. OMG how have we missed this woman.

Laurie owns the stage when she is performing. Her moves and her gestures draw the eye. Having seen the original Bob Fosse production of Pippin on Broadway I would have loved seeing Laurie playing the part of Fastrada, which I saw from program notes that Laurie had played somewhere. I'll keep an eye out for future productions starring Laurie Clothier and make a concerted effort to attend them.

Guys and Dolls from the 5th Avenue Theatre in Seattle, Washington.Katherine Strohmaier At CenterStage in Federal Way, Washington.Katherine Strohmaier we had seen before, playing the part of Sarah Brown, in the recent 5th Avenue Theatre performance of Guys and Dolls. I was irritated that I was unable to schedule a second performance of the musical into our schedule. A friend was hesitant about attending, but after reading our adventure she and her husband attended and loved it. It was top drawer.

Katherine has also appeared at the Seattle Children's Theatre, where we missed her. Both Laurie and Katherine have appeared multiple times at the Issaquah Village Theatre, a venue that has been our "must visit" list for sometime. In her fledgling performing days she was a lounge singer/pianist of a Columbia River sternwheeler. Again, something considered but never seen to fruition. We did get to see her play the piano in Tenderly, however. She sat down and played while director/musical director David Duvall walked over and sang a duet with Laurie.

An internet search revealed that Katherine has performed in a solo show Blue Rose where she dressed and sang like Rosemary Clooney. I would have liked seeing and hearing that.

Hats off to the CenterStage for bringing two northwest treasures south of Seattle for a wonderful production.

Award winning corned beef in Tacoma, Washington.

Perfectly cooked cabbage to accompany our corned beef dinner in Tacoma, Washington. The two-person concert lasted much longer that we had planned for, so we quickly called and inquired about our cupcakes. One of our friends had volunteered to pick up a dozen St. Patrick's Day cupcakes from Burning Cupcakes on Sixth Avenue in Tacoma. Owner Theressa had promised a collection of green gourmet cupcakes. The cupcakes were already picked up and dinner was about a half hour away, just about the length of time it took us to drive from Dumas Bay in Federal Way to North Tacoma for dinner.

I like corned beef, but for me much of the joy of eating corned beef and cabbage is . . . of course, the cabbage. I don't like it cooked to mush, and it shouldn't be raw, but added to the boiling corned beef a few minutes before serving it comes out perfectly toothy and flavorful. I enjoyed both the corned beef and the cabbage.

Excellent bread to accompany our corned beef dinner in Tacoma, Washington.Adding to the joy of an Irish dinner was good Irish Soda Bread and butter. We had several varieties . . . with raisins and without. If there had been time and I had thought about it, I might have stopped and bought some Kerry Irish Butter. That would have been perfect, but even with Darigold butter the bread was still wonderful.

I like butter on my cabbage as well . . . and the boiled potatoes and carrots that also accompanied dinner. Add a little salt and pepper to taste and it was a perfect meal.

Well, almost a perfect meal. You can't have a perfect meal without dessert, and we had that with the cupcakes. They were perfect.

Burning Cupcakes from Tacoma, Washington.I'm not sure what all the flavors were, but I know there was a Key Lime Cupcake, a Bailey's Irish Cream Cupcake, and a Yerba Mate Tea Cupcake. Burning Cupcakes had supplied a similar dozen the night before and will surprise me with a dozen more for a dessert auction at the Tacoma Executives Association luncheon on Thursday.

Theressa at Burning Cupcakes always does a nice job for me and she is becoming one of the top suppliers for events at the Broadway Center of the Performing Arts in downtown Tacoma as well. Every time I have my hair cut (Sharper Image on Sixth Avenue) I stop in and buy two cupcakes to present to Sharon and Mary before the scissors start clipping me,

A beautiful drive, wonderful entertainers, professional theatre, good friends, great food . . . well, all of that just contributes to a unique adventure worth sharing here in the Pacific Northwest.
