Tacoma Jaycees playing donkey baseball vs. KTAC in Lincoln Bowl 1975 - Tacoma - imageI've loved the Lincoln District for years. Peg and I were married at Holy Rosary just outside the District. In the 1970s we used to buy appliances for our rentals at an appliance store on South 38th that sold both new and used ranges and refrigerators. Just a few feet away from that was Frisbee's Bakery, which was a good place for donuts, cakes, and rolls. Lincoln Hardware was the place to go for virtually anything you need to replace or repair on a house. And in 1975 my Tacoma Jaycees raised over $3000 for community projects by playing Donkey Baseball versus the disk jockeys at rock and roll radio station KTAC.

Things have really changed since then. The appliance store is gone, the bakery is gone, Jaycees are almost non-existant, and radio station KTAC is FM and probably just digital. However, Lincoln Hardware is still going strong as is Carlson Brothers Jewelry . . . and what's even better is that the long time neighborhood is growing up and going international.

Cheese Burger from Jubilee Burgers - Tacoma - image"The work in the Lincoln International Business District is exciting. We have an amazing mixture of historic buildings, cultural diversity and potential for improvement. In addition to investing in the business district, we are also looking at how we can support the surrounding neighborhoods.

Iím looking forward to seeing the City invest in infrastructure and culturally-competent service delivery in this unique district." -- Tacoma Council Member Marty Campbell

From Jubilee Burgers to the Asian market that was once Food King, the Lincoln District is doing well and becoming a place for everyone.

Even the Flying Boots Cafe has returned in a slightly different venue.
