Madrona Deer Park Sculpture

Tree removal, which begins the sculpture construction - image.

We removed the cedar tree that had been at the southwest corner of our home for dozens of years before we even knew it existed. We lived with it for nearly forty years. It cast shadows on the entire front of the house and our parking space. It dropped needles onto our roof and pollinated twice a year creating breathing problems for Peg. We called Dan Folk of Apex Tree Experts to discuss our trees. In the end we removed five trees (one was already dead, two would have been wind casualties, and the other two gave room to grow for our other plants). We didn't want to be the people who took paradise and put up a parking lot, so we thought instead we would build a tree-like sculpture.

We approached architect and metal artist Jennifer Weddermann and commissioned her to create a metal sculpture that resembled elements of our favorite tree on our property, a madrona. The natural rust of the metal matches the color of the texture of the tree. In addition to the tree, we have yard deer who visit us frequently. We watch them graze on Japanese Knotweed, blackberry vines, and new growth of the madrona. We named the sculpture Madrona Deer Park.

The stems of the flowers are about six inches in length, but can cast a shadow five or six feet late in the afternoon.

Jennifer Weddermann, did a fantastic job for us. What a beautiful, living piece of art. Each year it should age gracefully and become more attractive . . . and interesting.
